WHICH DIET IS THE BEST ?

Updated: Jul 21, 2018

Let´s start this article with a direct message: there is no best diet. The best diet is the one that works for you and that you can stick to. It is individual, based on genetics, individual physical activities and of course your personal preferences. It´s a choice of each person and fit to his own needs.

There are although some recommendations to hit the optimal and healthy eating habits , which are associated with benefits such as:

  • Increased average life expectancy

  • Lower the risk of chronic disease

  • Improved body composition

  • Better physical function and well being

Design your own, unique best diet

Remember basic rule:

If your diet is too complicated, you won’t start. If your diet is too restrictive, you won't finish.

Popular diets such as vegan, vegetarian, keto, paleo, low-carb, Mediterranean, etc... each fits different people and each is the one´s best diet. Each have their benefits.

And there´s one pattern that comes across all of them: to prefer whole, minimally processed foods in their most natural state.

Why you should avoid processed food:

  • it spikes up your blood sugar and raise insulin

  • processed and man-made fats cause cellular changes

  • it contains added sugar, increased calories and leads to a greater insulin release

  • it contains added salt

  • it usually lacks fiber and nutrients, which means a poor nutritional profile

♥♥ EAT WHOLEFOODS

Therefore, eating a diet of whole, minimally processed foods is a surefire way to improve your nutrition profile. Suitable are vegetables, fruits, beans, starches, grains, fish, meat, and eggs.

♥♥ EAT PLANTS

Plant-based foods have several health benefits:

  • plants provide probiotics that feed the friendly bacteria in the gut to counter inflammation in the GI tract

  • rich in antioxidants that support mitochondrial health and reduce a high free radical load that is associated with heavy meat intake

  • loaded with fiber that can moderate blood sugar and lower insulin levels associated with carbohydrate-rich foods

Eating a colorful variety of plant-based foods will upgrade any diet, lowering risk of disease and moderating appetite for better body composition. Plan every meal to emphasize fibrous vegetables, including fruits, whole boiled grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes.

♥♥ EAT ORGANIC MEAT

Animal products are a nutritionally rich part of a healthy diet. Incorporating them, you add not only flavors in your diet, but variety of your meals. Although the key is to inform yourself with where your meat, fish, and dairy comes from and optimize for the most sustainable, and nutritious options.

♥♥ CONTROL THE SIZE OF YOUR PORTION

Take control over your protein or fat intake - it can affect your insulin balance and sugar cravings. On the other hand, please do not restrict your carbs and include high-quality carbs in your meals.

Be very careful with addictive foods such as pizza, cookies, chips or any refined carbs, so called "hyperpalatable". They´re made to stimulate food intake, and are hard to eat "just one". Food chemists achieve this by suffusing products with increased levels of fat, sugar, flavors, and additives.

You are the one who does your own food choices, so make them count! Food should be a pleasurable experience that adds to your life.

SUMMARY

Find out a way of eating that fits you and allows you to avoid cravings and feel satisfied with your meals. It can be a low-calorie diet, rich in portions, higher protein intake or a higher fat intake. Experiment with having a little healthy snack or a little cheat meal here and then, whether it is the one that keeps your mind off quitting this journey. Don´t be afraid to try, experiment and set your own way. Nothing bad can happen, at the end, again, only you are the one who chose what you eat, so make it enjoyable. If something will not work, simply change it and try again.

I believe you can do it this way :-)
